Which fuel is used in thermal power plant? What are the problems associated with this type of power generation?
A thermal power plant uses coal as a fuel. The problems associated with this type of power generation are:
  1. Coal burning results in emission of gases like carbon dioxide, sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide. These gases are harmful to our health.
  2. Nitrogen dioxide causes problems like ‘acid-rain’.
  3. Coal burning releases soot particles in the air. These can cause respiratory diseases like ‘asthama’.
  4. Coal is not a renewable source. Formation of coal takes millions of years. This puts a question mark on the future availability of the fuel in future.
